COMFORTING SOMEONE WHO IS GRIEVING

Text Size Text Larger Text Smaller

Here are some helpful thoughts to comfort someone who has lost a loved one. You probably are aware of these, but if even one thought is new and helpful to you, it is worth saying. Contact them, even if you don't know what to say. A call or a note just to say you've heard the news and are thinking of them will mean so much.

Be generous with your time. Give them time to talk about their loved one and let them feel your loving sympathy. Check in on them often with visits, phone calls, emails, and any other appropriate ways.

Let them know they are not alone. Help them to see the outpouring of love coming toward them, especially in all the little ways people are reaching out with love.

Remind them to accept offers of help. These offers are part of the outpouring of love. The more we give and receive help, the stronger our connections to one another are.

Let them know how much you cared about their loved one and how much you care about them, that you will be with them all the way on this journey of Loss and Healing.
